On the one hand, war and conflict have increased in the region and Turkey; on the other, the government’s words, admonitions and policies forcing women to be self-sacrificing and confined within family life have continued. A uniform life based on labor exploitation, violence, harassment, motherhood, heterosexuality, Muslimness and Turkishness is again imposed at work and at home. Unabated killings of women and the increasing hate-driven killings of trans people keep narrowing the space for women and trans people to live and be free. Against this, the determination and growing number of feminists who defend their lives against male violence and want peace have once again convinced us that our feminist struggle is on a path with no turning back.

We stand for life; we say let the guns fall silent!

Since last March 8, we feminists have said that against the continuing war in the country we stand for life; once again we call for the guns to fall silent urgently! We know that bombs exploding throughout the country and war bring only violence, death and destruction that cannot be repaired. Where displaying the bodies of murdered women is accepted as a victory and women’s underwear is laid out in besieged homes, it is clear that war is strengthened by the mentality of male domination. We feminists stand for social peace! As women and trans people living in this country, we remind those responsible not to commit any more crimes and to act urgently for peace!

We insist on feminist struggle for our labor, our identities and our bodies!

Another consequence of war in Turkey and the region today is that all other political moves are made invisible. We feminists continue resisting the oppression of women’s labor, identities and bodies in our everyday and political lives. We know your policies that aim to keep women out of sight, to keep violence from leaving homes, to imprison women, and to obscure equality between women and men through divorce commissions! In defiance of those forcing women to have children, we say that we will have children if we want to and will not if we do not! In defiance of those who do not see women’s labor either at home or at work, and who close nurseries to imprison women who have children in their homes, we claim our labor! We resist practices leaving women without employment and social security! Whoever they may be, to those questioning when we go out onto the streets, what we wear and what we do, we say, “It’s my life, what’s it to you!” In short, we will keep resisting attempts to control our lives, our labor and our sexuality. We women continue to organize our lives through feminism!

We claim our lives!

Against the restriction of our spaces, against policies of male domination, against men who organize through war, hatred and violence, we claim our lives! We defend ourselves against the oppression we face at home, on the streets and at work, against the harassment and rape inflicted on us; we expose violence and strengthen women’s solidarity. We know the road from a punch to murder; we give no quarter to male violence. We put pressure on the judiciary, security forces and other state bodies that fail to fulfill their duties against male violence, telling them not to watch this violence but to take action against it. Against the danger of death coming from men and the violence we have suffered for years, we defend our lives and exercise our legitimate right to self-defense. We refuse confinement to homes and oppressive families and build our lives. We go to school, oppose marriage forced on us at a young age or later, work and stand on our own feet. We live together as girls and boys, experience love woman to woman, laugh out loud, divorce, live single if we want to, do not have children if we do not want to, and abandon neither nights nor streets nor squares; against every obstacle we claim our lives!

We are expanding our feminist struggle!

Despite increasing oppression and violence in the country, despite the masculinity they seek to exalt, despite men who want to lay hands on our lives, we women and trans people strengthen our solidarity. At times like these we hold even more firmly to our feminist struggle. We fill public spaces and streets, defend our lives and freedom against the male-dominated system that wants to separate us, and come together around feminist struggle!

Long live March 8!

Long live our feminist struggle!

The 2016 Kurmanji press statement calls for peace, women’s solidarity and feminist struggle.
