2004: Men attack, the state protects them; we want shelters, not graves

Signed by: Feminist women

On March 1, 2004, Güldünya Tören was murdered by her brothers following a family decision, because she had become pregnant after being raped by a relative. Exchanges on the kadinkurultayi@yahoogroups.com email group led to a decision to take action. Following a meeting convened through an open call, a demonstration was held at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery on March 6 under the name 'feminist women', with a banner reading 'Shelters, not graves'. The feminist women who organised the March 6 demonstration decided to call another action for March 8, highlighting the different dimensions of violence against women.

More than a hundred women attended, carrying numerous placards against male violence. The press statement was read in Mis Street. Among the participants in the Feminist Night March was Cynthia Cockburn, who was in Turkey that year.

Holding the demonstration under the name 'feminist women' and organising a Feminist Night March on March 8 for the second time made its continuation in subsequent years more likely. As in 2003, the guiding principles were to convene meetings through an open call to women's groups, to base participation on individuals rather than groups, and to carry placards prepared together by women without organisational signatures.

Call to Action

2004: Call for a Meeting and ActionDear friends,I am writing on behalf of the working group for the action at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery on March 6. Zelal wrote about it earlier. We will meet at the cemetery gate at noon on Saturday. The banner, badges and placards are ready; we will carry them and read out a statement. As the group organising and contributing to this action, we have called ourselves feminist women, as Zelal also mentioned the other day.I want both to remind you of Saturday's action and to pass this announcement on to all women who can come, and to announce preparations for the event on the evening of Monday, March 8. We propose meeting in Taksim that evening, walking to Mis Sokak and making a statement. We want to carry lanterns and make some noise. We could play drums, or something else: not something festive or entertaining, but a steady, single rhythm. The statement has not yet been prepared. We have not had the opportunity, and we also want to prepare it with broader participation. So we propose meeting at KADAV's Beyoğlu office at 2 p.m., after the cemetery action, to write the statement together. We want it to address other dimensions of violence against women as well. See all of you who can join us on Saturday...Email sent on behalf of the group by: Ferah KökmenSource: kadinkurultayi@yahoogroups.comDate: March 4, 2004

Email Correspondence Ahead of the 2004 Feminist Night MarchThis year, however, violence against women will be the focus of the March 8 events: the rally at Abide-i Hürriyet Square on Sunday, March 7, and the actions organised by feminist women at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery on Saturday, March 6, and on İstiklal Street on Monday, March 8. “Honour killings”, which recently attracted some public attention after Güldünya was murdered in the name of “honour”; the sexual harassment we experience at school, on the streets and at work; the beatings and rape we experience within the family, in custody, in war and in prison... Unfortunately, the list goes on. In every case, women are subjected to systematic violence, and this is considered “legitimate”. Contrary to what is often assumed, violence against women is not rooted solely in religious rules and feudal values. The violence inflicted on women is also founded on a male-dominated system. Moreover, this male-dominated mentality permeates not only men, but also the state apparatus and the organisation of the state itself.Over the past year, friends close to us, with whom we have organised women's actions, have reported being abducted and raped by police officers. In other words, men are not the only perpetrators of violence against women: state violence is right here beside us.This makes the demands for “shelters, not graves”, for immediate amendments to the existing law without waiting for the new Turkish Penal Code, for a Penal Code containing provisions that deter and indeed seek to eliminate violence against women, and for the persistent pursuit of cases of rape in custody all the more important. For this to happen, of course, the government and parliament must not turn a deaf ear to the demands of women and women's groups.Yet, as I have tried to explain above, none of this is enough on its own. What needs to change is an entire world, a whole way of life... This is why, as always, the struggle against male domination and sexism remains at the heart of our agenda.Best wishes,Meriç EyüboğluSource: kadinkurultayi@yahoo.groups.com
