2013: Our bodies, our lives, our decisions are ours; keep your family to yourselves + ŞÖNİM serves men and cannot prevent male violence

Signed by: Feminists

During this active period for the Istanbul Feminist Collective (İFK), the decision to call the march was made at an İFK meeting. That year’s agenda included the abortion rights campaign and the case of Nevin Yıldırım, which feminists followed and brought to public attention. Both featured in the call to the march.

Working together in the ‘Abortion Is a Right, Women Decide’ campaign also encouraged individual women involved in women’s politics within mixed-gender groups to attend the march’s meetings. They were not, however, active in organising it. Calls and statements were issued by İFK, which did not include mixed-gender groups.

Around 3,000 people joined the march in 2013. The ‘Abortion Is a Right, Women Decide’ campaign contributed to the increase, but a more important factor was that young women at universities had begun to see the March 8 Feminist Night March as a place for them. More people attended individually or in small groups rather than as organised contingents. The AKP’s intensifying policies, which denied women’s equality and placed the family rather than women at their centre, also contributed to the growing turnout.

With the abortion rights struggle in mind, the meetings discussed centring the banner slogan on the body. But they decided to place liberation at the heart of the wording rather than violence and abortion, and agreed to include family policies. The resulting slogan was ‘Our bodies, our lives, our decisions are ours; keep your family to yourselves’. The banner was signed ‘feminists’. A second, smaller banner read ‘ŞÖNİM (Koza) serves men and cannot prevent male violence’.

For the first time, the 2013 organisers drew up a comprehensive shopping list for Eminönü and established a budget. They decided to seek contributions from individual feminists as well as the İFK ‘constituents’ of the We Revolt Against Femicide campaign.

Artists involved in organising the previous year’s march had introduced stencilling. In 2013, a group of artists again prepared stencils together with the organising team.

Women gathered in Galatasaray at 19:30 and marched towards Taksim, where the press statement was read. It focused on family policies and abortion. It criticised Law No. 6284, which had come into force in 2012, and the Violence Prevention and Monitoring Centres (ŞÖNİM) established in the same period. It also addressed heterosexism and the violence and discrimination experienced by trans people, highlighted Nevin Yıldırım’s case, condemned the legal action to close the Van Women’s Association, and expressed solidarity with the women from İŞTAR who had been arrested while carrying out shelter work.

The post-march party took place at The Mekan. There was no admission charge; instead, a collection box was passed around in solidarity with Nevin. Attendance far exceeded that of previous years.

A dispute about transphobia that arose during the march was discussed together at a subsequent meeting. Participants agreed on the principles of not discriminating against march participants and not generalising transphobic attitudes by attributing them to all feminists.

Call to Action

2013: Invitation to an Organizing Meeting A Call to Feminist Women; We are gathering to organize the eleventh March 8 Feminist Night March together! In the eleventh year of our Feminist Night March, we will be out in the streets at night on another March 8, raising our voices against patriarchy, male violence, sexism, heterosexism, capitalism, militarism and war. In 2012, we marked the feminist movement's thirtieth year with the slogans "We are women, not the family; we are in feminist revolt." This year too, men continued to kill, rape, harass and beat, while the state, from its laws to its judiciary, continued to "side with men." While continuing its family policies that make women dependent on men and seek to imprison them within the family, the state attempts to interfere with our right to make decisions about our bodies by effectively banning abortion. The state's sexist-nationalist rhetoric continues to be reflected in Kurdish women's lives as state violence. Throughout the year, as we sustained our feminist revolt against patriarchy through our actions, we also said in the streets: "Femicide is political," "The murder of trans people is political," "Support women, not the family," and "Abortion is a right, the decision belongs to women." We grow stronger together, side by side, and as we grow stronger our struggle grows. We weave our struggle through feminist solidarity against men and the male state, which set out to uphold the "family," not women, try to intervene in everything from our existence to our decisions, our lives to our bodies, and disregard our domestic labor. This is our call to organize together our Night March, where we give voice to this solidarity on March 8: We are meeting at SFK on Friday, February 22, at 19:00! Istanbul Feminist Collective

2013: Call to the Action We are gathering for the eleventh "March 8 Feminist Night Action"! Since last March 8, we have not remained silent in the face of threats and attacks seeking to seize women's bodies, labor and lives! We pushed back the attempt to ban abortion, brought onto the agenda with the Prime Minister's claim "Abortion is murder. Every abortion is Uludere," by declaring "Abortion is a right, Uludere is a massacre." Despite the AKP government's pressure for "not even three, but five children," we refused to be incubators. We continued our struggle for real justice against male justice that searches for consent in rape and unjust provocation in murder. Süreyya Yıldırım in Erzurum, Pembe Dal in Bingöl, Hanım Korkmaz in Zonguldak and Gülfidan in Sakarya, who were constantly subjected to violence and rape, forced to take up weapons because the state did not protect them, and injured or killed their husbands; Nevin Yıldırım, who killed her rapist; and many more women who resisted by exercising their right to self-defense showed that it is possible not to submit to the power of men and patriarchy. Despite the strengthening of the family as state policy, and despite the oppression and threats of death, violence and poverty we face because of the family, the number of women refusing marriage and divorcing increased. To claim our labor, bodies and identities, to proclaim women's struggle and solidarity against patriarchy, heterosexism, homophobia, capitalism, nationalism, militarism and war, we are together and in the streets for the March 8 Feminist Night March, now in its eleventh year! Press Statement

2013 Press Statement Let Our Bodies, Our Lives, Our Decisions Be Ours! Keep your family for yourselves! As women from Turkey, over the past year we have resisted and struggled against government policies that, through the perspectives "The family comes before women" and "Women are for the family," seek to increase pressure on women in order to protect and strengthen the family, and to make women dependent on the home, family and their husbands. Slogan: We are women, not the family; we are in feminist revolt. Through its imposition of "motherhood," "honor," "acceptable wives," "three to five children," and practices that keep women at home, the AKP government sees our women's bodies as machines for population growth. By trying to ban abortion, the AKP places obstacles in the way of abortion and pursues policies that exert pressure and domination over our bodies and narrow our living spaces. Slogan: AKP, take your hands off my body! Abortion is a right, the decision belongs to women! Male violence surrounds women's lives at home, in the street and everywhere. The state, which recognizes women only within the family, offers its social policy only through the family and as a favor! Women subjected to violence cannot access their rights; the fear they experience in courts, governors' offices, shelters and state institutions forces them to return to the violent environment. Slogan: Support women, not the family! The state tries to condemn women to heterosexual families; it denies sexual orientation and gender identity and the existence of lesbian and trans women. Trans women are excluded from society and forced into sex work. Trans people are killed, and their killers receive sentence reductions for unjust provocation. Slogan: The murder of trans people is political! Slogan: Do not be silent, shout: lesbians exist! In Turkey, three women are killed by men every day, one in three women is beaten and one in five women is raped. In this country where violence is widespread and women are unsafe, there are only 103 shelters. The state, which can make every kind of mathematical calculation about population growth, forgets arithmetic when the number of shelters is mentioned! Life in existing shelters is structured to send women back to their families, to the environment of violence. The government, continuing its sexist language through the name "Cocoon," has put Violence Prevention Centers into operation, keeping women and men under the same roof. These institutions, established for reconciliation between women and men and for family counseling, serve men, not women, when they mediate between women subjected to violence and men who perpetrate it. We object to this practice fundamentally. Slogan: Prevent murder, not divorce. Law No. 6284 was enacted with the claim of preventing violence against women, without evaluating women's organizations' objections. This law has been in force for a year, but its implementation is left to the will of the individuals and authorities women approach. Women's right to life is left to the discretion of police officers, judges, prosecutors, governors and district governors. Nonstandard practices frighten women in judicial proceedings too. Decisions are made not to support women but through a sexist mentality. The law serves men, not women! From the word "Family" given to the name of Law No. 6284 to its organizational form, the Ministry works in every sphere to perpetuate male domination. Yet you cannot stand against male violence by strengthening the family. If you side with the family, you do not side with women! Slogan: You said family and family; you made our lives a prison! As women, throughout our lives we see the state search for pretexts to legitimize violence against women by invoking consent in rape and unjust provocation in femicide. This year, in the case of Nevin and many other women, we saw women isolated before the male-dominated judiciary; to protect themselves and resist male violence, they are forced to secure their own justice. Women exercise their right to self-defense! Slogan: Real justice, not male-dominated justice! As women living in Turkey, we have said many times how much the environment of war and conflict, state militarism and violence that has continued for thirty years affects all women. Over the past year, pressure has increased especially on Kurdish women through the state's nationalist-sexist policies. Women have been and are being arrested for attending the March 8 Rally, teaching, thinking, expressing their thoughts and simply being Kurdish. We demand an end to arrests and the release of those in prison. Turkey has for some time witnessed a new negotiation process. In this process, as women who know the consequences of war and conflict and who struggle, we take a side: we say "Peace, right now!" Slogan: We insist on peace! The intervention against İŞTAR, the women's counseling center that works as a shelter, the arrests of women from İŞTAR, and the closure case against the feminist women's organization VAKAD clearly demonstrate the state's attempts to obstruct Kurdish women's organized struggle. As feminists, we will stand alongside both İŞTAR and VAKAD. Slogan: Woman, life, freedom! Slogan: Long live women's solidarity! Women who went to the Directorate of Family and Social Policies on March 4, condemned the AKP's sexist policies and raised a banner in the building were subjected to police violence and torture while Fatma Şahin was inside condemning male violence. The state's male-dominated violence cannot frighten us! Slogan: Let the father come, let the husband come, let the state come, let the baton come, Revolt again, revolt again, freedom again! Today is March 8! Women's Day of Struggle and Solidarity! We women reject the idea that today's family order, which gives us labor slavery, lifelong caregiving, violence and oppression, is the only legitimate and desirable way of life! If your sacred family means women being killed every day, a sentence of marriage, bearing children for the state, we revolt against this imposition! We continue our struggle against capitalism and patriarchy, against men and male power, through our actions, revolt, resistance and women's solidarity. Istanbul Feminist Collective/March 8, 2013 Slogan: Long live March 8! Long live our organized struggle!

We object to this practice in principle. Discussion

2013: Email Inviting Participants to a Meeting at Leylek We are all exhausted by the tensions that grew after the events at the March 8 Night March and triggered debates about feminist politics that have continued over the past years. As lesbian, bisexual and trans women and women who do not identify as LBT, we believe that standing side by side at the March 8 Night Marches should not be this difficult. As feminist women and trans people from the feminist movement and from within and outside the LGBT movement, troubled by the LGBT and feminist movements being set against each other and feeling a need to be together, we want to come together to think collectively about how we can prevent this rupture and establish a new basis for discussion without disregarding existing criticisms, disagreements and hurt. In the first meeting, we aim to produce a text by reviewing the minimum common ground we share specifically concerning the march. Let us meet on Saturday, March 23, at 13:00 at Leylek Kafe (Küçük Parmakkapı Sokak, No:15/3) to discuss how we can move forward together.. See you on Saturday!
